Studies have shown that 3D MSC spheres can be used as activating ecological niches for cancer stem cells

3D spheroids and 3D spheroid-derived cells are significantly higher than 2D-cultured MSCs. 3D spheroids and 3D spherically derived cells produce higher levels of anti-apoptotic factors, including epidermal growth factor.

Transplanted 3D spheroids of human fat-derived MSCs have higher survival rates and increased paracrine compared to 2D cultured cells. Importantly, 3D culture strategies have improved the effect of treating MSCs on AKI, characterized by reduced apoptosis, reduced tissue damage, increased vascularization and improved kidney function. These results show that 3D spherical culture produces more exosomes than 2D culture.
